So what exactly are Hi Oleic peanuts?
They're a completely natural peanut that has been carefully bred over many
years to be better than old-fashioned peanuts.
But don't worry ... they still taste great!
Hi Oleic peanuts have a higher level of a healthier mono-unsaturated fatty
acid called "oleic acid", the same monounsaturate found in olive oil.
University of Florida research has shown that Hi Oleic peanuts - as part
of a low-fat diet - have the potential to help lower LDL blood cholesterol
levels in postmenopausal women with high cholesterol.
An animal health study found that Hi Oleic peanuts increased levels of both
monounsaturates and lowered polyunsaturates in the blood.
As well as these potential benefits, Hi Oleic peanuts also stay fresher for
longer!
The first Hi Oleic peanut was bred in the United States after scientists
spotted a different trait in a few plants.
These peanut bushes were eventually crossed with a commercial variety to
produce the first commercially grown Hi Oleic peanut variety, Sun Oleic 95R.
In 1995, the Peanut Company of Australia imported 20 seeds of SO95R and after
seven years of local development, offered it to local peanut growers.
Since then, more Hi Oleic peanut varieties have been bred in both Australia
and the US.
Did you know peanuts are not a true nut? They're a legume like beans and
peas that just happens to grow underground.
In Australia, most peanuts are grown in Queensland and Kingaroy is still
known as the "Peanut Capital of Australia".
Hi Oleic peanut seeds are planted in long paddocks between November-January.
Small peanut bushes slowly grow. The peanut pods start developing after small
yellow flowers appear on the bushes and then wither. The flower stems, or
"pegs", then bend over into the ground. The peanuts form underground on the
bottom of these pegs.
Harvesting peanuts is different to most crops. First the taproot of the peanut
bush is cut just below the pods. The bush and pods are then lifted, shaken
to remove excess soil, turned upside down and left to dry in neat rows in
the paddock called "windrows".
A few days later, a thresher moves through the windrows, picking up the dried
bushes and shaking the peanut pods loose.
These peanuts are then delivered to the Peanut Company of Australia. The
loads are dried and stored in Kingaroy's famous silos.
Before they go to customers, peanuts can be shelled, roasted, blanched (skins
removed from kernel) or even flavoured at PCA's headquarters in Kingaroy.
Hi Oleic peanuts are simply the best peanuts yet - naturally!
